Ireland's Mark McInerney claimed the BestInvest World Golf Croquet Championship with a 7-4, 7-6, 7-5 win over Hisham Aboesbaa from Egypt yesterday. The win is the first by a non-Egyptian player in the 15-year history of the GC World Championship. The win perhaps signifies that GC has graduated from being an "Egyptian" game to a true world sport. Morning Coffee: It's GC Championship Week
By the time this post hits the web, the BestInvest Golf Croquet World Championship will be well underway. It looks like another update filled week, but at this point, it's not clear how the tourney will be "broadcast." All hints from the Nottingham list indicate the Under-21 GC scoreboard was a test for the open event. It was pretty slick so let's hope so. As soon as I can detect live scoring, Croquet Network will spread the word. In the meantime, here is the regularly scheduled news update ...
Morning Coffee: Reg Bamford Wins the British Open
Could you dream up a better croquet month? After kicking things off with a Solomon Trophy battle at Hamptworth, the schedule rolled right into what is considered the most prestigious annual croquet tournament -- the British Opens. And this year, we were treated to the ultimate singles final with Reg Bamford taking on Robert Fulford. Bamford took his eighth singles open title with a –18tp +26sxp +17 +26sxp (3) over Fulford. Bamford and Rutger Biejderwellen also took the doubles title with a +10, +18 win over Mark Avery & David Maugham +10 +18.
