Top Croquet Mallets for 2024

To celebrate the new year, Croquet Network is excited to present our Top Croquet Mallets For 2024 showcasing the world’s best croquet mallet makers. Purchasing a good quality croquet mallet that fits your playing style is one of the most challenging issues for croquet players face. Only a select few live near a location that offers a walk-in location where a player can try out a mallet. For the majority of players, a croquet mallet purchase consists of an exhaustive internet search and a bit of guesswork based on the available online photos.

Quite often, players learn about a new mallet by seeing another player at a tournament with a prospective mallet model and politely asking for a brief trial. In fact, this is probably how a significant number of mallet purchase decisions are made.

Until the game of croquet finally reaches the masses and mallets start showing up at Scheel’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, Croquet Network is pleased to fill the void and provide our list of top mallet makers based on our multi-factor formula that utilizes a combination of independent and resources and 2023 analytics data from our rapidly growing traffic base (thank you, readers). has been crafted through a multipoint formula to direct mallet buyers to at least the most sought-after mallet makers. Choosing a mallet is a personal choice and several factors should be considered. However, there’s a good reason why so many croquet players seek out certain manufacturers. Top-quality mallets draw an audience over time and with that, we present the following list of the top 10 croquet mallet manufacturers for 2024 and hope it helps narrow your search for the perfect mallet.

BEST CROQUET MALLETs 2024

#1 Dave Trimmer-Pidcock Mallets

The Dave Trimmer/Pidcock line once again holds the top spot for croquet players around the world. The heads are made from Carbon fiber and Kevlar/Carbon fiber weave keeping the body very light and strong. Peripheral weighting is maximized by having the main weight of the mallet head kept at the ends, in the form of one-inch thick brass inserts which are finely machined before being permanently bonded into place.

#2 Oakley Woods

Up from the #4 spot in our 2022 mallet rankings, Oakley Woods Croquet is a family-owned business, located in Brighton, Ontario, and founded by Don Oakley. With over twenty years of custom woodworking experience, our shop was kept busy making a variety of fine wood products, from small-turned items to solid oak staircases and cabinets. In 1992, the company was asked to replace some very tired backyard mallets. This uncovered a local need for making high-quality croquet mallets. That led to more mallets, followed by requests for other croquet-related items. Soon the company was providing balls, hoops, deadness boards, clips and a whole range of products. Don Oakly became highly engaged in the sport at all levels, from playing 'backyard' croquet to competing at the national level in Canada and USA. He also felt compelled to give back his time to the sport by serving on the boards of both Croquet Canada and the US Croquet Association.

#3 Terminator Mallets

Up from #5 on the 2022 list, Terminator’s top of the line CarbonXtremes are designed to give players maximum performance by putting the weight to the ends while keeping the center of the body light-weight but strong. strength. So what? Good question!!! Remember your lesson from General Science: An object in motion tends to remain in motion (in a straight line) unless acted upon by an external force. So, play with soft hands and let the mallet do the work. The Terminators have a very high "moment of inertia" so they will stay on track as long as you don't strangle the handle. The brass ends are faced with an injection molded Nylon/FiGlass composite that will give you just a bit of "feel." Think of these as "Tires on a car." They are super tough and you can replace them after a few years.

#5 PFC Hoop Maker

PFC Mallets have been designed and perfected by highly qualified specialist engineers. Peter Coles designed the PFC mallet with shock transfer in mind. The design was then sent sequentially to three overseas engineering friends, each having master’s degrees in selected phases of engineering. Each perfected the design and a mathematic formula was written to determine where the 'holes' in the ALLOY should be cut, ACCURATE TO A QUARTER MICRON CENTERS (a human hair is approximately one micron). Additionally, the mathematician has a master’s degree in shock transfer technology.

The CAD program was sent to Australia where the mallets are cut from block SPRING ALLOY (not aluminum) on a half-million dollar robot-controlled machine. Aluminum is not an option as it deteriorates too quickly, oxidizes and will not transfer shock.

After installing the membrane between the striking faces and the Alloy Head, robots install the Zelatron striking faces into the heads and lock them in by various methods. and then faces the head on all sides. Zelatron is a blend of special materials, is almost indestructible and a little softer than any other material used, therefore it “grips the ball” better.

No heads are the same. They vary up to a gram in weight and half a micron in size. The machine then accurately finds the center of gravity to a quarter micron and then applies the mathematic formulae to determine where the holes should be cut. No hole is round, subtle epitrochoid shapes are used. Such is the accuracy of the placement of these special holes, that a percussion chamber is created in the center of the Alloy Head where the Alloy is slightly more dense. (that's another story).

THE FINAL RESULT: Because of the percussion chamber, balls must be hit 20 percent less hard to achieve the same distance as any other mallet. THE LESS HARD YOU HIT A BALL THE MORE ACCURATE YOU ARE.

PFC MALLETS carry a ten-year unconditional HEAD GUARANTEE. In almost ten years of production, we have never had a mallet head claim as faulty. After almost ten years of production, PFC mallets are made at a rate of between 60 to 100 mallets a month to customers worldwide. No one has ever made a mallet of these materials or of design percussion transfer design with such thought, and it is doubtful anyone ever will, which confirms the PFC Mallet is such a superior mallet, that will last a lifetime.

#6 NUMERO UNO

A new entry on the 2024 mallet list, Ray Puckett has successfully manufactured mallet heads for more than a decade. Puckett pioneered the internationally acclaimed, competition-winning, peripherally weighted mallet head in NZ. When he took up croquet in 1996, he began to read books on ball sports and developed in 1997, the first commercially produced peripherally weighted mallet, which he sold internationally for 17 years. Many croquet head manufacturers have now adopted the peripherally weighted design. Seeing the need for Golf croquet players to have their own mallets and achieve consistency of play, at a very competitive price, Ray Puckett developed the Numero Uno Golf Croquet Mallet.

#10 Treetop Mallets

Jeff Farrington started playing croquet many years ago but only found the time to take it up properly since leaving full time employment in 2010. He soon found that his 25-year-old New Zealand-made mallet still worked but looked a bit dated compared to what everyone else was using. So he started to think about buying a new one, but then it occurred to him that with his cabinet-making hobby, he had filled the garage with woodworking equipment and likely had the tools and materials to have a go at making a mallet.

His first attempt was quite amusing as he quickly discovered that shaft material needed to be quite stiff if it was not to wobble like a jelly after hitting a ball. For the challenge of getting the performance needed while utilizing wood, he settled on a hollow wooden structure which can weigh as little as 250g, with a design that adds weight back just behind the end cap. This approach maximizes the peripheral weighting, and hence the moment of inertia.

His early handles were also wood, but that inevitably added weight away from the “business end” of the mallet. He targeted a lighter substitute and came across a solid foam that seems ideal. He now uses the material almost exclusively as it can be worked like wood, but weighs only a few grams and is comfortable to hold in wet and dry conditions.

Inevitably other people asked about the mallet and having now supplied quite a few to his fellow club members in 2015 he set up a website and sells the mallets as a micro-business.

JUST 10 MALLET MANUFACTURERS?

There are definitely more mallet makers out there, but this is our opportunity to showcase the most sought after brands. If we missed your favorite croquet mallet manufacturer, don worry. Croquet Network offers a global directory with contact details. View the Full List of Croquet Mallet Manufacturers.

How The Top 10 MALLET List IS MADE

The 2024 mallet list uses a data-driven approach that factors in multiple sources and four data points to arrive at a ranking score. Three of those factors are from an independent source. The primary eligibility rule for our top 10 list and Mallet Directory is that a manufacturer must have an active website. For players looking to purchase a new mallet, the assumption is that mallet maker that doesn’t have an actual website is not interested in the wider market of croquet players. If you are a manufacturer looking to expand your business, contact us to learn more about building your web presence.

Croquet Network does have a continual research process, but new makers pop up all the time. If your favorite mallet is not on the list, please feel free to comment or reach out as we also count on the croquet community to keep up to date. We are always happy to research and add a mallet manufacturer to our full equipment directory, which is the first step in trying to make the 2025 list.
