Morning Coffee: Time to Get Out and Play

It's 81 degrees in Kansas City, so it's time to stop writing about croquet and start playing. Here's your speed version of the Tuesday Morning Coffee ...

CROQUET WEEK GC: To kick of the USCA's Croquet Week and Club Teams festival of croquet, Sandra Knuth Walsh took a 7-5, 7-1 win to snag the USCA Croquet Week Golf Croquet Tournament title. Larry Cranfield took the first flight final with a 7-1, 7-4 win over Karen Heckman.

Morning Coffee: GC Worlds Take Center Stage

The three-segment 2017 edition of the WCF Golf Croquet Championships is now well under-way in Cairnlea, Melbourne, Australia with the Under-21 GC World Championship now down to eight players. Here's an update on Day 3 from the Croquet New Zealand Facebook page:

Morning Coffee: US Announces MacRob Roster?

There was certainly a bit of drama in the long wait for the US MacRobertson Shield roster line-up. I was sort of expecting a Livestream press conference with fireworks, cheerleaders and some AC/DC. Alas, the roster quietly appeared on the Americas forum on Croquet World Online. The report there names Jeff Soo, Ben Rothman, Danny Huneycutt, David Maloof, Matthew Essick

Morning Coffee: GC WTC Around the Corner

The WCF's Golf Croquet World Team Championship will be held May 15-21 in England and you can now get a look at Tier 1 and Tier 2 blocks on croquetscores.com. Probably the most fascinating note is that Australia has been relegated to Tier 2. You can see the World Team GC rankings here:

Morning Coffee: Croquet Cuppers

After 11.5 hours of watching croquet this past Sunday and a good chunk on Saturday, I've certainly been suffering from an AC Worlds hangover as I try to get back on track. It was mentally draining, so I can't imagine how Stephen Mulliner and David Maloof must have felt this week. It was tough to go three years between AC Worlds, so thankfully the next worlds are just two years and will be held in New Zealand.

But as the incredibly diverse and vibrant sport of croquet rolls on, many will have noted St. John's edged Navy 3-2 in the Annapolis Cup in the midst of the AC Worlds. With the nine-wicket Annapolis Cup generally drawing 2,000 spectators, it is known as the biggest spectator croquet event in the world.  So, now England

Morning Coffee: St. John's Bounces Back Over Navy

Visit the Store A few media sources are "reporting" that St. John's took the annual Annapolis Cup event. One is indicating a score of 3-1, which doesn't explain what happened to the fifth game. With the win, St. John's now leads the series 24-5 over Navy. The Johnnies have now taken six straight over Navy.

The main thrust of the media articles is that croquet is either silly or boring and the event is strictly about the party. As the largest croquet spectator event in the world, it creates quite a dilemma for this

Morning Coffee: Annapolis Cup 2011 Media Blitz

Visit the StoreEarly reports indicate that SUNY-New Paltz took the USCA Collegiate Nationals (6W) title last weekend in Philadelphia, but there is little time for rest for Navy and St. John's. The Annapolis Cup nine-wicket test is on tap next Saturday at St. John's and HometownAnnapolis.com caught some great quotes from Tuesday's media day. The over-riding theme is that this could be the closest AC in years. Excerpt --

Croquet Network Magazine (June Issue Available)

Click to launch the full edition in a new window

The June issue of Croquet Network was released over the weekend and features coverage of the College National Championship played in April at the Merion Cricket Club. In addition, the June issue includes a tribute to Jerry Stark repinted from the Croquet World website along with a profile of U.S. golf croquet champion Mohammad Kamal. As a bonus, Eric Sawyer contributed a report on a recent GC tournament held in Pasadena to honor Kamal.

Regrettably there is an error on the cover. I apologize as Pavlos Papadopoulos was spelled wrong. Surprisingly, changing out a digital magazine is a little more challenging than you might think -- mainly because of URLs and view counts. It will be corrected as soon as possible.

Morning Coffee: Annapolis Cup, Hayes Center and USCA Association Championship

Available for purchase, click for detailsSt. John's ruled the Annapolis Cup again beating Navy 5-0 last Saturday. St. John's now leads the series 23-5 and have pushed their current streak to five straight. Probably the biggest surprise to come out of the event is that the St. John's president took the opportunity to trash the sport of croquet:

"St. John's President Chris Nelson proclaimed croquet the "slowest sport" and invited the campus' guests to 'enjoy the picnic and watch the grass grow.'"

The Rutherford B. Hayes Center Croquet Club continues to generate headlines in their local media. The week they got a write-up on their season openining session.

Morning Coffee: Annapolis Cup, Alix Verge, WCF Team Rankings

Kicking off this week, we are just a few days away from croquet's best attended event. On Saturday, Navy and St. John's will stage a five-match nine wicket battle with an estimated 2,000 spectators on hand. St. John's leads the series 22-5 and the Johnnies have won the last four years.
